WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE
PLATFORM TENNIS “Progress is our most important product” was a tag line used by General Electric to explain their work. Thus far that is also the best way to describe the efforts of the Platform Tennis Museum and Hall of Fame Foundation. Another year has passed, and while progress has been slow, there has been tangible forward movement.
One of the supporting projects is the publication of a “coffee table” book about the history of platform tennis. Tina Kelly, a Director of the American Platform Tennis Association, is assembling and editing the book with the help of many contributors. The book will be used as a gift to donors of significant contributions and also will be sold to provide funds for the project. It is expected that the book will be published in 2010. Also in support of the fund raising activity, the Foundation’s Chairman, Bob Brown and Museum Curator, Jim McCready, have worked with museum consultant Ed Puches to develop a model of a display case featuring the 1970’s decade, which is pictured above. The model provides, on a small scale, a distinct look at the physical layout in the display case of the memorabilia, people, and key historical events of that period. Aside from its use in the fund raising program, this model sets the stage for the development of similar displays featuring other time periods. Another program that is in an early stage of development is a plan to approach private clubs for contributions from their members. Various levels of contribution will be recognized and a club in excess of $20,000 will distinguish the club as a “Founding Member” of the Hall of Fame Museum. The Foundation’s President, Rich Lombard, has mailed a letter to several hundred persons whom he knows are platform tennis aficionados. He believes they will want to be a part of this effort to preserve the history of the sport and recognize those who have been honored by induction into its Hall of Fame. I urge everyone to visit the Foundation’s web site (Click HERE) to view the location of the museum and the exciting efforts that are being made to establish it as a monument to the sport. what do you think? let me know! info@platformtennisnews.com |
