All about 2009 Nationals

ACE
– Goodspeed / Mansager. Few words other than “simply amazing” can describe this team. Based on a quick web search, they are the first team in the history of platform tennis that has won a Seniors National Championship and an Open National Championship in the same year, much less within seven days of each event.

ACE – Nationals in Cincinnati. A well run open nationals. Full of plenty of mid-west hospitality. Everything ran like clockwork. Even the weather cooperated. Kudos to Todd Ward and his huge volunteer staff.

ACE – Best One-liner at Nationals in Cincinnati. With the men playing Friday afternoon but check-in not until Friday evening, one male player commented to his partner, “You realize if we lose first round, we could be done before check-in.”

ACE – Nationals’ Umpiring. For those new to the game, finals umpire Wayne Dollard, in addition to verbalizing the game score after each point, added hand gestures, pointing towards the side that had service advantage, thus helping those spectators who were unfamiliar with the names of the players to understand which team was ahead in the game score.

ACE – Nationals’ Reporting 1. For those unable to make Nationals, whether they be the Open Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mixed Nationals in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, or the Men’s Senior Nationals in Chatham, New Jersey, and Scarsdale, New York, and still wishing to stay up-to-date with what is happening, the web based reporting of scores and highlights has certainly gotten much faster and better.

ACE – Nationals’ Reporting 2. For those who constantly check their internet browsers during the day, PaddlePro recently added a “Last Updated” feature which is a time and date stamp so viewers know when the draw results were last changed.

FAULT – Roving Foot Fault Judges. Great to see that some attempt was made to deal with rampant foot faulting. Sadly, improper instructions were given so that foot faults were called only if a player’s foot was over the service line not touching it.
